"Elf Princess" (Block print)
Medium: ink on paper
Completion: October 2014
size: 21.6 cm x 28.0 cm
My inspiration for my first block print was Kirsi Salonen’s “Desert Sand”. I chose Kirsi as an inspiration because she has a lot of fantasy artwork. Desert Sand caught my attention because I found the elf to be beautiful and mysterious, I put the elf in the same position but changed the hair, added clothing and instead of adding texture in the face like Salonen’s I added texture in the background.
I started of by sketching how I wanted it to look on regular paper, then I used the grid method to add the same sketch to a piece of linoleum. For the block print I used three different types of linoleum cutters to cut out the sketch onto the linoleum.
For my block print I experimented with different methods so I could get two perfect prints. I experimented first my using different amounts of ink, which made some of them to light and some of them with excess amount of ink, I also used different textured ink with left some of them look smooth and some of them look bumpy. Other experimentations was using two different size rollers, and making the actual print by hand or by using the printing press.

Warhol, Andy. Marilyn. 1967
|
As and inspiration I used “Marilyn” by Andy Warhol, because Marilyn Monroe was looked at as a beautiful woman and a lot of woman wanted to look like her. It was a perfect fit since my project was a woman made of things that others looked at as beautiful.
My first idea was to show perfection through beauty, by making a beautiful woman out of clay that looked like Marilyn Monroe and surround her by makeup. My final idea was to make a woman out of things that are considered beautiful like makeup and diamonds. The first step in making this project was drawing out my final idea so I could have reference at what to look at. My second step was painting black, the piece of wood that I would be using as support for the makeup. After this I experimented with different positions for the makeup to see how they would look on the wood and decide which one was best. Then I used a hot glue gun to add the makeup to the piece of wood. I used cream, beige and brown eyeshadows to represent the body of the woman. I also emptied out some of the eyeshadow compartments. I used red and orange blushes to represent the dress the woman is wearing. Lipstick caps were used to represent hair curlers and rhinestones to represent diamonds to make the lips and eyes, I also used fake eyelashes for the eyelashes. I am really happy on how my project looks and also because of the meaning behind it. I emptied out some eyeshadow compartments to show that beauty is on the inside and not with all the makeup people use to hide who they really are. Since people make it look like materialistic things (diamonds) and only woman that wear makeup is what makes someone perfect and beautiful. |

"Medusa" (Choice piece)
medium: Oil pastels on canvas
completion: April 2015
She was golden haired maiden, but she was punished and each lock of hair turned into snakes, she now had the face of an ugly woman and her love inspiring eyes turned into furious orbs. Now everyone who looked into her eyes will turn to stone. Snakes represent venom so her eyes were like her venom.
For my choice piece I wanted to follow the Greek Mythology theme I had used in my sacred vessel. From all the Greek mythology creatures I chose to do Medusa, I wanted to do a twist on it by making not making her look completely ugly but still making her look evil. For this I used watercolors because besides working with watercolors before I wanted to experiment more with them and create something with a contrast of light colors for the main focus and a bright background. |
